AMC 1998 Vision Statement

As adopted by the congregation at the 1998 annual meeting, Atkinson Memorial Church will:

• Worship in the liberal tradition that is open to spiritual expressions from many sources and traditions. Key elements of the Sunday worship service will include stimulating sermons and a well developed music program.

• Continue to express the integrity of its pioneer spirit and non creedal heritage; honor its commitment to congregational governance; and preserve and enhance the historic church building, which is appropriately listed on the Oregon State and National Registries of historic buildings.

• Have a congregation characterized by community and embracing unity in diversity. The community will be welcoming, open to all people and will provide a place where divergent voices can speak freely and respectfully, be heard and respectfully received. The envisioned congregational size would be up to 350 members at the end of five years -- a size that will support the activities and facilities identified in this statement.

• Stimulate and develop the spiritual and intellectual qualities of our community. A well organized religious education program with strong children's, junior youth, senior youth and adult groups will provide instruction, intellectual stimulation and respectful opportunities to consider our own and others' beliefs.

• Support the church with strong professional and volunteer leadership. This will be reflected in a core group of paid professional staff, including a strong settled minister. Consistent with the principle of lay ownership of the church, active involvement of many people from the congregation giving their time in volunteer capacities is necessary for the healthy continuation of the church.

• Link in vital ways to the surrounding community through fine arts and music programs, through service projects addressing community needs, and as a positive voice for social concerns.

• Ensure that there is adequate and acceptable space in which to carry on our worship and other activities. In addition to maintenance and restoration it will be desirable to remodel parts of the existing building for convenience and accessibility and to consider additional space for RE classes, community service facilities, archive center and library.
