Atkinson's Director of Religious Education

The Director of Religious Education is the staff member responsible for overseeing the church's religious education program.

Ann Scott, Atkinson's Director of Religious Education Ann Scott was born and lived in LaGrande until she was fourteen. Her family lived for two years in West Linn, and then she went to high school in McMinnville. She attended Portland State University in the early seventies. Ann's great, great grandfather and grandmother, Bynon J. and Charlotte Stearns Pengra, crossed the Oregon Trail in 1853 and settled in the Eugene area.

Ann and her husband, Mick Mortlock, lived for twenty years in the Portland area. She worked as a musician, an early childhood educator and a teen parent program director. When she became a religious educator in 1992 she knew she had found her calling. Ann and her family moved from the Portland area in 1990 to Phoenix, Arizona and to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1997.

Ann and Mick discovered Unitarian Universalism in 1990 and attended First Unitarian in Portland for a few months. They have been members of the Phoenix UU Congregation, the West Hills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, the Main Line Unitarian Church in Devon, PA and the Unitarian Society of Germantown, in Philadelphia.

Ann served as the Director of Religious Growth and Learning for the Phoenix UU Congregation from 1992-1997. She served as the RE Administrator at the Mainline UU Church for one year and for the last three years has been the Director of Religious Education for the Unitarian Society of Germantown.

Ann and Mick have a blended family that includes four offspring. Laura and Sean Kelly are both young adults living in the Portland area. Sarah Dyrhaug is a young adult in the process of moving from Chicago to Seattle. Leigh Mortlock is fifteen, finishing her freshman year of high school and a very active member of YRUU.

Mick has been very active in UU congregations over the last decade. He has served on the "Community, Conflict, Covenant Committee," has been a Denominational Affairs Chair, Adult RE Chair, has led men's groups, and has served on the Board of Trustees.

They have a beloved springer spaniel named Franklin and a dark grey cat named Shadow, who is definitely not a cuddly lap cat, but they love him just the same.
